Yes, with AI you can get a draft of a simple website in 1–2 days, even if you can’t code or design. But a website that simply exists and a website that Google and AI assistants find, and where clients book you, are two different things. Here is an honest look: does a small business still need a website in 2026, what AI really does, what it leaves undone and when it makes sense to hire someone.
Does a small business still need a website in 2026?
If you’re booked out for months through referrals, maybe not. For everyone else a website usually pays off for three reasons.
- You don’t own Instagram. The algorithm decides who sees your posts, and an account can be blocked overnight. Your website and domain stay yours.
- Google and AI read websites, not Instagram. When someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude for “a good nail salon in Tallinn”, the answers come mostly from websites, Google Maps and reviews. More in how to get recommended by ChatGPT and Google.
- Clients check you out before booking. Prices, location, work examples and a booking button in one place mean fewer questions in DMs and more bookings.
What can AI really do in 2 days?
There are two kinds of tools.
- AI website builders (for example Wix, Framer, Hostinger). You describe your business in a couple of sentences and get a structure, colours, draft texts and images. Then you change everything with the mouse.
- Tools that write code (for example Lovable, ChatGPT, Claude). They produce real code and give you more freedom, but to put the site online you need to understand hosting and domain settings.
With either, in 1–2 days you’ll have a page that looks like a website. That’s a genuinely good start, especially on a zero budget.
What doesn’t AI do for you?
| Task | Does AI do it? | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Domain and email | No | The domain is in your name, mail to info@ arrives |
| Texts and offer | A draft | Real prices, services and your story, not generic phrases |
| Photos | Someone else’s | Your work and you, not stock photos |
| Mobile version and speed | Partly | Does it open on a phone in 2–3 seconds? |
| Titles for Google | Partly | Each page has its own title and description, one H1 |
| Structured data (JSON-LD) | Rarely | Do Google and AI understand what you do, where and for how much? |
| Google Business Profile | No | Category, area, website link, photos, reviews |
| Search Console and analytics | No | Is the site indexed, where do visitors come from? |
| Cookie consent (GDPR) | Rarely right | Do ad and analytics codes wait for consent? |
| Contact form | Looks like it works | Does the message really reach your inbox, not spam? |
| Several languages | Translation, yes | Does each language have its own address Google can see? |
These rows are exactly what separates a site that “exists” from a site that brings enquiries.
How much does a DIY website cost?
- Builder plan: usually 10–40 € a month.
- Domain: about 10–30 € a year.
- Your time: a draft in 1–2 days; a properly set up website people can find, more like 1–3 weeks for a beginner.
For comparison, a simple website from a studio in Estonia usually costs 300–1,500 €. See the full price table in how much does a website cost in Estonia in 2026.
When should you do it yourself, and when should you hire?
Do it yourself if:
- your budget is zero right now and you just want to start;
- you have the time and want to learn;
- you need one simple page in one language.
Hire if:
- you want to be found in Google, on Maps and in AI answers;
- your clients speak Estonian, Russian and English;
- you need online booking, a price calculator or anything that has to work reliably;
- your time is worth more than the website.
I use AI every day myself, for draft texts, ideas and code. It makes the work faster, which is how I keep prices right for small businesses. But a person who knows what to check is responsible for the result.
How to check your AI-built website in 7 steps
- Open it on your phone over mobile data. Does it load quickly, and do all the buttons work?
- Send yourself a message through the contact form. Did it arrive?
- Search Google for
site:yourdomain.ee. Is the site indexed? - Set up Google Search Console and submit your sitemap.
- Create or update your Google Business Profile and add your website link.
- Check that every page has its own title and description.
- Ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude: “What do you know about [business name] in [city]?” and see what AI finds about you.

Frequently asked questions
Does a small business need a website in 2026 if it has Instagram?
Usually yes. You don’t own Instagram: the algorithm decides who sees your posts, and Google and AI assistants barely read it. Your website and Google Business Profile are what Google, ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude use to recommend you.
Which tools can you use to build a website with AI?
There are two kinds: AI website builders (for example Wix, Framer, Hostinger), where AI creates a first version on the platform, and tools that write code (for example Lovable, ChatGPT or Claude). Builders are easier for beginners; code tools give more freedom but require understanding hosting and code.
How much does a DIY AI website cost?
A builder plan usually costs 10–40 € a month and a domain about 10–30 € a year. Plus your time: a draft in 1–2 days, a properly set up website that people can find more like 1–3 weeks for a beginner.
Does Google penalise websites made with AI?
Not for using AI as such. Google looks at whether the content is useful and genuine. The problem starts when the texts are generic, like on thousands of other sites, and there are no real prices, work examples or contact details.
